A offensive player being one pass away generally means that they are within direct line of sight for a short to medium range pass from the ball handler. A player who is not one pass away would be a distance away often on the opposite side of the basket line or would have another teammate in closer proximity to the ball.

This terminology is often used to help describe situational defense.

Here are two examples of players that would be one pass away. Post player O1 and at the top of the key O3 would both be considered as one pass away.
