A Pass Fake is when an offensive player attempts to create a passing lane by faking a pass to another player.

  • Important in Zone Offense. Pass fakes will allow the offense to quickly make the defense shift, even if just slightly.
  • Defenders eyes will often follow the path of the anticipated pass allowing for offensive opportunities.
  • A popular coaching phrase used is "Fake a Pass, Make a Pass".
  • When trying to make a Bounce Pass past a a defender, a tactic often used is to fake an Overhead Pass up high and then complete a bounce pass down low. This can also be done in the opposite order. Faking a pass will cause the defenders hands to drop/raise to the level of the fake.
  • A pass fake can also be used to create space between a ball handler and a defender.
